Hi, we're so glad you're visiting.  Welcome to the CFP Pet Community.

The CFP Forum is officially "inactive" -- I am exhausted and just cannot keep up with it.  All our wonderful moderators and buddies who wholeheartedly participated with me in this forum also have busy lives and -- one could say -- we all got burned out talking about our fur-kids for years. It got to be pretty addicting, but life and reality has now taken over. I love you guys -- enjoy reading the posts OR if you want to register and say hello, please do not expect an immediate response or a lot of replies. God bless and please take care of your fur-kids.

I put my hamsters in the living room a few days ago. They were making too much noise in the bedroom for my son to sleep.

Anyway, they have not fought in a while. They had occasionally, but lately they haven't had fights. I guess they did, though because the smaller one's head had a MAJOR cut on it and it is dead. It was alive earlier. It was chewing on some stuff in one of the tunnels. I have been gone a few hours - and it is dead. The only explanation I have is that the OTHER hamster killed her!

I am in shock! I guess I shouldn't buy another to replace this hamster - and just have only one hamster - but I am just IN SHOCK right now. I can't believe Hermoine killed Piglet! They haven't been fighting. WHY would she just kill her today??????

I need some advice.

Maybe I am just tired and not thinking....so help me think.

I am SO ANGRY that Hermoine killed piglet. I am SO ANGRY. I took her and her cage and put her in the closet and shut the door. I just can't look at her right now.

Piglet was a sweet hamster. Hermoine has always been a pain. I bought her because she was getting beat up at the pet store. I didn't want the ohter hamsters to hurt her. She's fat - obese - and she hardly moves - she's so lazy. If you pick her up, she bites you. She's never been a good hamster. Yet, I feed her and take care of her and treat her like my other pets - and now she murders Piglet. I'm just mad - because my son wanted a small pet that he could hold and take care of. His first hamster was so sweet. It rode in his cars and sat in his pocket. Then Hermoine was horrible. And Hermoine has always been horrible - Piglet was just getting to where she was a good hamster and liked to ride in pockets and would let my son play with her - Hermoine never has been that way - and I'm just angry - I wish that I didnt' have hermoine. I can't buy my son a new hamster - I don't want Hermoine to kill it.

What do you do when you have a pet that you don't like? I need to do something with her. Maybe I could take her to a pet store and tell them my situation and see if I could GIVE her to them and they could sell her to someone else - or use her as just a breeding machine for them to make more money.

What is your advice? To tell the truth - although I don't like her - I can't stand to think of something bad happening to her or someone else getting her and then being mean to her - so what would you do?

Or am I just angry right now and need time to cool off?

I think you're in shock and your emotions are totally understandable. What a horrible thing to happen!! Crying I don't blame you for being angry and upset. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. Hermoine sounds like she needs to be solo in her cage, unfortunately. Frown

This is so sad - I don't know a thing about hamsters, but I would never put another one in the same cage with Hermoine - my cats fight occasionally, I'd be beside myself if one of them killed another. I don't blame you for being angry. I just don't know what I'd do in this case, probably consider finding Hermoine a new home. You probably won't feel the same about this hamster again, I'm afraid.

Hello, hamsters are very territorial animals and only a few breeds can live together in a cage but most of them prefer to be alone. What type do you have?
Sorry to hear about this terrible news

You had two syrian hamsters and this was unfortunately inevitable - this breed should NEVER EVER be kept together under any circumstances past 3 weeks of age in mixed sex groups and 8 weeks in same sex groups. There is a wealth of information out there in books and the internet which advises this. Please I cannot emphasise this enough to anyone the only hamsters which can life together are dwarves - Campbells, Chinese, Winter White and Roborvskii, and then they must usually be litter mates or introduced pre-sexual maturity. Females of dwarf species will often even fall out eventually.
This post really saddens me, as does your response to what was natural behaviour to Hermoine. It is terribly sad but totally avoidable. Sorry if you think I am too harsh but I feel physically sick. Rest in peace little one, may your journey over the bridge be a happy one.
Please can anyone interested, or already owning a hamster, join a society such at The Hamster Society, this has been established since 1992 and is one of the leading figures in the UK Hamster Fancy.

Only by sharing can we fully appreciate our little furry friends.

Babyboos, you seem to know a lot about hamsters. What causes "wet tail"? My grand-niece's 2 hamsters died last month, overnight. The store where she got them said the litter appeared to be infected with "wet tail" since quite a few customers complained their hamsters died.
