Hi, we're so glad you're visiting.  Welcome to the CFP Pet Community.

The CFP Forum is officially "inactive" -- I am exhausted and just cannot keep up with it.  All our wonderful moderators and buddies who wholeheartedly participated with me in this forum also have busy lives and -- one could say -- we all got burned out talking about our fur-kids for years. It got to be pretty addicting, but life and reality has now taken over. I love you guys -- enjoy reading the posts OR if you want to register and say hello, please do not expect an immediate response or a lot of replies. God bless and please take care of your fur-kids.

I have been thinking I'd like to have a bird right now I don't know anything about them and I would like to research them before buying one. I also need to let my youngest child get a little older. I know I want a bird that talks but I don't want a mean one and I've heard that some birds are mean. is there a web site I can go to to find out if this would be a good pet for my family to have some day? When I was a kid we had love birds and parakeets and we loved them. Any suggestions would be great.

I would recommend a mustache parakeet (they are in between the size of a parakeet and an Amazon or African Grey – not too big and not too small! I have one (Bandit), and he's wonderful. I have heard that mustache parakeets have the ability to talk if you get one when it is young – one that is used to being handled and is hand fed. African Greys are great talking birds and most are friendly, but again you should get one that is very young and used to be handled/hand fed. Since you have a child, I would not recommend a cockatoo or a Macaw because they are extremely needy, and I have heard that they get very aggressive if they don't get enough attention. They can be very dangerous (their beaks can hurt you very badly). It can't hurt to do some research on your own about this before deciding which bird to get. Good luck, and please let us know which bird you decided to get and how it's going. (I'd be interested in knowing).

Here is a GREAT webpage on all sorts of birds:

http://www.centralpets.com/pages/birds/birds.shtml

This should help you figure out which bird is right for you & your household.
