Hi, we're so glad you're visiting.  Welcome to the CFP Pet Community.

The CFP Forum is officially "inactive" -- I am exhausted and just cannot keep up with it.  All our wonderful moderators and buddies who wholeheartedly participated with me in this forum also have busy lives and -- one could say -- we all got burned out talking about our fur-kids for years. It got to be pretty addicting, but life and reality has now taken over. I love you guys -- enjoy reading the posts OR if you want to register and say hello, please do not expect an immediate response or a lot of replies. God bless and please take care of your fur-kids.

Ask Crested about hairless dogs...

I made this post in dogomania, and so I thought I'd put it here. Many people have asked me about hairless dogs and... well.. I explained it on dogomania (clickety-click).
If you have any questions. Ask me! Smile

Crested, you gave me an excellent idea for this forum. I'm going to list the different breed types, starting with yours and then if anyone has any questions, they can just ask the owners directly. Thank you for thinking of this Smile

Also, can you copy and paste that info here so they don't need to leave the site to read it? It would help. Smile

Ok, I have a question:

1) How big to they get in size?

Question: Why do they call them ugly? I think they're cute.

Barbi: Ok, here's what I wrote in dogomania:

I've got a LOT of questions about hairless dogs and I'm thinking of makeing an FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page on my homepage. I have one allredy, but I thought I'd make a new version of it. I thought I'd allso put it on a page called karvattomat.cjb.net that I have about hairless dogs (in finnish only). The questions about Chinese Cresteds will go to my homepage and all the questions will go on karvattomat.cjb.net (I'll translate it).

So... If there's ANYTHING you want to know, just ask. I'll anwser here and when all of your questions have been anwserd, then I'll put them on thoose pages. Smile What do you think of the idea?

Here's some anwsers I've made on the dogomania board too:
quote:
I guess this is a kind of stupid question, but don't they get cold? How are they in snow? Or just when it gets chilly out?

They need clothes on cold weathers just as we people do. (Would you go on a walk naked when it's below zero celcius out and windy, or when it's snowing?) They can go quick out on winter even with a lot of minus degrees to pee-pee, but that's just quick out and quick in. Some like to play in snow when they have clothes on, but some HATE snow (like Ben does).
Here's a couple pics of Ben's clothes.

And here's a couple of Ben's two t-shirts that work pretty well on mosqueetos on summers or if he has itchy skin or something (because of his allergies).
He looks so cute in those getups!! How adorable!! He doesn't fuzz when you dress him?

No. Well at first he did, but when he got used to it he figured out that clothes = warmth, so now there's no problem. Smile

/Crest
And here's the anwsers to YOUR questions!

Barbi According to the FCI standard they grow to:
quote:
Ideal height in dogs : 28-33 cm (11-13 ins) at withers.
******* : 23-30 cm ( 9-12 ins) at withers.
Weight varies considerably, but should not be over 5 1/2 kgs (12 lbs).

(Ben is 33cm's)

Sabrina: Well some people think they are ugly, because they are not used to see hairless dogs and because without even seeing them make a picture of them in their head that in their eyes equals ugly. When I heard that there were hairless dogs out there, I thought to myself "I will NEVER get a hairless dog" (before I even saw a picture). Well... never say never... Roll Eyes
I got so caught up that I want another hairless and then I think (if I get the chanse) I'll take a American Hairless Terrier (very, VERY rare. There are only 3 AHT's in Finland at this point and they came one month ago). Atleast this is the dream.

Oh, and there are allso hairless CATS, RATS and I've even seen a hairless HAMSTER!! (Not sure if it was a hamster, but a little fellow with big teeth and no eyes Eek) I've allso seen a hairless FERRET!

Besides, although I'm getting a Maltese with lots and lots of hair, I think a lot of people would welcome a hairless one. Aw, I can't wait to dress up mine the way you do. Ben looks like he enjoys wearing clothes, plus he looks so cute! You should do a FAQ section on your site. I'm sure a lot of people would ask you questions.

Okay, here's another one: Do they get along with other breeds?

Sabrina: Well it depends on the dog and on the other dog. Chinese Cresteds in general do get along very well with other dogs, but there are some dogs that are afraid of other dogs and are really shy (like Ben) and that takes a LOT of time and a LOT of beeing patient to try and make friends with your doggy. So it depends on the dog, it depends on the dogs parents (how they react to other dogs) and on the things the doggy has seen when he or she was a pup.

Bravo! This is what keeps me returning to CFP all the time. Just look at those photos! How adorable. Ben looks like quite a personality and very well-behaved to let you dress him up like that. My compliments to the photographer for snapping such adorable pictures Wink Was it you?

Ok, Maggie.

Here's Ben at his breeder. (about 5 weeks old)

Here's he at the first day home:

Sunbatheing:

And his little nest.

Sleeping:

He's kind of grown out of his nest, but he still loves to sleep in it. He left it for a while because (I guess) he thought he wouldn't fit in it, but one time when I was playing with him, I put him in the nest and you should have seen his face. He came out of the nest. Stopped playing. Looked at the nest. Then looked at me... then looked at the nest again.. REALLY confused. I put him there again and that just made him even MORE confused, because he SHOULDN'T fit in it, right? But in a couple days he had taken it over again and now he has masterd the "tecnique" of sleeping in it. He sleeps ON HIS BACK and turns so that the opening is faceing the cealing and has nearly closed!! Here's a picture of him looking at me with thoose "get away! I want to sleep" -eyes...

Oh, and even if theese aren't puppy pics, I HAVE to share them.

Here's Ben playing with a ball:

And here Ben has noticed something on the floor (I don't know what even if I was the one takeing the picture...)

And here Ben says "Ho Ho Ho, MERRY CHRISTMAS!". Big Grin

Soooooo... What do you think of my little terminator?

Oh, and I have to tell you... Ben has this "flip-flop" -ear that I haven't yet been able to catch on film... See when he wakes up and is still a bit sleepy his one ear flops down (wich looks EXTREMELY cute by the way), but everytime I try ant take a photo of it, he get's intrested about the camera and the ear rises up and "flops" back like it's supposed to be. Big Grin

These pictures are adorable. I think Ben is unique looking plus he would be perfect for people with allergies. I have a question for you. Since Ben does not have hair on his body, does he burn easily in the sun? Do you have to use a special lotion?

He is cute, isn't he? Wink

Well some hairless dogs bodies may burn in the sun, so you have to use sunlotion. (normal sunlotion, just check that there isn't parfume in it). Ben has a pretty dark skin so normally, I don't have to use any sunlotion. Dogs that have light skin, can burn, so you see to it that they don't sunbathe all the time (wich might be a problem, because atleast Chinese Cresteds are naturally sunbathers. They search for a spot in the floor/sofa/chair/bed/etc. where the sun shines. I have found Ben a couple times on the KITCHEN TABLE sunbatheing!!).
So no special lotions, just see that it doesn't have that much perfume. (kids sunlotion usually is good) Smile

Well, I think he is adorable. That photograph of when he was 5 weeks old is adorable, plus the one of him sleeping is really pretty. Do people ask you questions about Ben's breed all the time? Be glad it is not a well-known breed otherwise puppy mills would have been exploiting it.
